Last December, we were back in France to interview Catherine and Gilles Vergé from Maison Vergé in Viré, near Macon.
We were interested in interviewing Catherine and Gilles because we had heard a lot of positive comments about their wine estate. We were very curious and eager to learn more about their work.
Located just north of Macon, between the towns of Clessé and Chardonnay (where the grape originates from), Viré is a pleasant little town where Catherine and Gilles Vergé make wonderful natural wine. On December 23, we drove to Viré from St. Sernin du Bois – just over an hours drive along small country roads. Unfortunately, it rained the entire time, leaving us with no opportunity to take video in the vineyard, but we did get some footage using our gopro camera…
Hospitality is what makes Burgundians some of the most pleasant people with whom to share a glass of wine. Catherine and Gilles are very active in the natural wine movement, so we stayed throughout the afternoon listening to their stories, asking questions, and drinking their delicious wine. Before we became too tipsy to manipulate the camera, we decided to tape a little interview in the tasting room (a lovely space which used to be the village Sunday school during the war…).
Catherine explained the origins of the new organization they created called “Les Vins S.A.I.N.S” (Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfite -ajouté). To become a member of Les Vins S.A.I.N.S., a vigneron must only use grapes (no additives, no sulfites) throughout the entire production process for all wines produced on the wine estate.
Gilles explained how he makes his wines, and all of the challenges that he has and continues to encounter…
There is so much more than we can tell you instead here is a short version of the interview (in French)…[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/58786577]
… and if you like that snippet, we suggest that you check out the longer version of the interview, where you can learn a bit more about the interesting work of Catherine and Gilles.[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/58691270]
A bientôt for more interview.
